What is Childhood Apraxia of Speech?
Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a rare speech disorder that requires ongoing, intensive therapy. While this seems intimidating, CAS is highly treatable and can yield incredible results if treated as soon as possible.
In CAS, the speech muscles are not weak, but rather they don’t perform normally because the brain has difficulty directing or coordinating the movements. This causes an issue because in order to speak correctly, the brain has to make plans and messages that can be interpreted by your child’s speech muscles including how to move the lips, jaw and tongue in a way that can produce accurate sounds and words.
Signs and Symptoms of Childhood Apraxia of Speech
At Alex V. Speech Pathology, we specialise in treating complex children’s speech disorders such as Childhood Apraxia of Speech. As Childhood Apraxia of Speech is often misdiagnosed, our director, Alex Volgin specialises in differential diagnosis, meaning that he is able to diagnose CAS with a higher success rate.
This is important because treatment for CAS is very specific; therefore, it cannot be treated properly until your child is diagnosed with the condition.
If your child is diagnosed with CAS, Alex will used drill-based therapy in regular 20-30-minute sessions (once or twice a week) until significant results are achieved. From here, your child may still require ongoing therapy which the team at Alex V. Speech Pathology can offer.
